Early middle age

400 - 450 A.D. The Anglons,  the Saxons, and part of the Frisian people move to the islands of Great Britain. The most important Saxon region was what is now called Westfalen (Germany), but their territory reached into the eastern part of the Netherlands also. 

481 A.D. Childerik, a king of the Franks, dies in Doornik.

481 - 511 A.D. Clovis, son of Childerik, kills the other kings of the Salian Franks, then conquers Gallia. About  506, he was baptised in Reims by St. Remigius. He dies in 511 and divides his empire amongst his four sons. The Netherlands and the eastern part of Belgium were given to Theoderik I, and was called Austrasia, with Reims (now in France) as capital. The western part of Belgium, called Neustria, was given to Chlotarius I, who resided in Soissons.

613 - 629 A.D. Chlotarius II unites Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy. Pippijn I of Landen, a local nobleman, becomes "majordomus" of Austrasia and after a while he is in effect the ruler of this country.

716 - 719 A.D. Charles Martel, a member of the dynasty of Pippijn, and illigetimate child of Pippijn II, is recognized as "majordomus" of all of the empire of the Franks.

737 Theoderik IV, king of the Franks, dies. The real power is with Charles Martel and he decides not to appoint another king. His son Pippijn III (the short) does appoint a Merovian king in 743, but in 751, he decides to put this king away i the monastery of Sint-Bertijns and appoints himself as king of the Franks, with the blessing of the pope. He is inaugurated by St. Bonifatius, archbishop of Mainz.

800 A.D. Charlemagne is crowned emperor by the pope in Rome.

862 A.D. Boudewijn I of Flanders (with the iron arm) is duke of various parts of Flanders. He abducts Judith, the daughter of his king, Charles the bald. In 864 he gets rid of the vikings in his part of the country. His prestige was very high after this accomplishment.

879 - 882 A.D. Period of large viking attacks in the Netherlands.

925 A.D. Henry I, king of Germany, conquers Lotharingen (???), to which the Netherlands belong. All of this territory will remain a part of the German empire until 1648.

918 - 965 A.D. Reign of Arnulf the great, grandson of Boudewijn I. He is the undisputed lord over Flanders.

1006 - 1007 A.D. Last viking attacks in the Netherlands.
